The year was 1975 and it was the CMA Awards. Charlie Rich "The Silver Fox" was the reigning CMA Entertainer of the year.  Let's just say he didn't seem thrilled that John Denver was on the ballot.

According to reports like this one from  Rolling Stone Charlie Rich had a few too many gin and tonics backstage.  He also must have known that John Denver was about to win "Entertainer Of The Year" because after to mutilated the envelope he read Denver's name and set it on fire.

The best part however is the uncomfortable reactions by Conway Twitty and Glen Campbell (who ironically won a grammy award).  When you compare this to Kanye West's TWO rants at different Grammy Awards, they seem pretty tame in comparison.
