Country girl Janelle Arthur sang the classic tune 'I'll Never Fall in Love Again' on 'American Idol' on Wednesday night (April 10), turning in a somewhat spotty performance that earned a very mixed reaction from the judges.

The night's theme centered around the music of Burt Bacharach and Hal David, who wrote some of the most deceptively tricky songs in the pop music canon. Though they sound simple, those songs feature complex chord progressions and unusual melodies that don't resolve in the expected ways, and many of the contestants struggled with the material.

Arthur started off relatively weak, singing in a key that may have been slightly too low for her. She gained strength as she went along, and projected well, but she did struggle noticeably with some of the unusual melody turns, giving a performance below her normal par.

Still, Keith Urban praised her, saying, "I feel like I see a different side to you every week, and I love that."

Nicki Minaj disagreed, telling Arthur that she simply felt the performance was boring. Randy Jackson concurred, saying, "It was definitely a little lackluster."

Mariah Carey was a bit easier on Arthur; while she felt it wasn't one of her best songs, she felt it ended well, noting, "It's a different style."

Arthur surprisingly ended up in the bottom two last week; she'll learn her fate this week on the results show Thursday night (April 11).
