A line of severe thunderstorms caused property damage in Lubbock and other parts of the South Plains on Wednesday.

The storm caused power outages in Lubbock, Wolfforth, Buffalo Springs Lake, Shallowater and the Lyntegar service area in Sundown, McConal, Seminole, Flat and Ropes. The National Weather Service also reported power lines being downed in Lamb County.

KAMC 28 storm chaser Derrick Ginter spotted a tornado in Earth as the line of severe thunderstorms strengthened after 8:30p.

Some of the high wind totals recorded were 61 mph at the KFYO studios, 74mph at the Texas Tech Mesonet site in Lubbock, 81 mph in Reese Center, 79 mph in Levelland, 71 mph in Olton, 48 mph in Lamesa, 70 mph at the KAMC 28 studios and 75 mph at the Texas Tech Mesonet site in Anton and 72 mph in Snyder.

Rainfall totals include 1.29" in Littlefield, 0.6" at the KFYO studios at 82nd & Quaker, 0.92" at Lake Alan Henry, 0.79" in Post and 0.88" in Ralls. Hail ranged from pea size to golf ball size in Lubbock.  Golf ball size hail was reported along Erskine Street, in North Lubbock.

The Motor Inn of America, located at 4925 Marsha Sharp Freeway (near 29th Drive), suffered significant damage.  KAMC 28 reported that a portion of the hotel's roof was blown off its structure by the high winds. There were some injuries in the incident.

Damage in Lubbock included trees uprooted; roofs and awnings blown off of homes; gas stations and businesses; freestanding signs blown down; fences blown down and debris scattered across yards, streets and roads.

Debris and street flooding caused the closure of 500 East Broadway, in East Lubbock, after the storm passed. Power lines were downed at 4th Street and Slide Road.

Other damage in Lubbock included: portions of Flint Avenue in Tech Terrace were closed between 19th to 21st Street due to fallen trees.  KAMC 28 reported significant property damage to a home in the 3900 block of East Baylor. Blowing sheet metal and downed trees caused the damage.

Covenant Lakeside hospital suffered damage during the storm.  Windows were blown out and water got into rooms.

A few places where gas station awnings were damaged: 82nd Street and Frankford and the 2600 block of Parkway.

Lubbock Power and Light reported 8,000 meters affected in their service area just after midnight.

As of 2:30a, KFYO News had not received any additional reports of injuries in Lubbock, due to the storm.
