One of my favorite, if not my favorite female country singer, Connie Smith, was born on this day in 1941 in Elkhart, Indiana. Her voice is truly what country music is all about.

She got her start in 1963, winning a talent contest in Ohio. That brought her to the attention of country music star Bill Anderson. He was so impressed that he talked her into to going to Nashville.

RCA Records signed her to a contract. One of the songs she recorded was a song written by Bill Anderson called "Once A Day." It was released in 1964 and went on to stay at number one on the Billboard charts for eight straight weeks.

It would be her only number one song, but she continued to chart songs in the Top 5 or Top 10 through the 1970's.

She still sounds great and continues to perform on the Grand Ole Opry where she has been a member since 1971.

In 1997 she married country star Marty Stuart and they are still married.
