It's a scary time of year, but one of the scariest things is slicing through your finger or hand, while you're trying to carve a jack o lantern!

Accidental cuts and punctures around pumpkin carving time keep emergency rooms hoppin'! Cutting through a pumpkin can be very tough and the more pressure you apply, combined with the surface becoming slippery, can make for a potential hazard.

Use the proper knife, not just some blade you grab from the kitchen or toolbox. Blades specified for the task make it much easier and safer.

Take it slow.  Hurried jobs result not only in a botched Jack O Lantern, but could result in a serious injury to you or someone helping you.

Don't let the kids carve.  You'll save yourself and them a lot of trouble and potential injury.

Once your masterpiece is safely completed, make sure your way of lighting it isn't a fire hazard. Place it in a place where it won't catch other things such as dry leaves, your grass, plants or house on fire.

Be safe, be creative and go for it!
