Davis Webb committed to Colorado after deciding to transfer from Texas Tech.

It wasn't a hard commit. There wasn't paperwork. He was still a student at Texas Tech.

He has now, according to ESPN, chosen Cal over Colorado.

Davis Webb made the right choice.

There was a log jam at the top of Colorado's depth chart. Not to say that Webb could not have gone on to win the job, but there's a better situation available to him at Cal.

Not only does Sonny Dykes, the head coach at Cal, have ties to the offense that Davis Webb knows already, but Jake Spavital is also the team's offensive coordinator.

Spavital, the brother of Texas Tech coach Zac Spavital, was the QBs coach at Texas A&M after Kliff Kingsbury left the Aggies. He also coached with Kliff in Houston and was the QBs coach in West Virginia when Geno Smith had his best year.

Spavital has connections to many branches in the Mike Leach offensive system that allowed Davis to earn 5,557 yards and 46 touchdowns in pieces of three seasons at Texas Tech.

The Dykes' version of the Air Raid does not put as much pressure on the QB to make plays outside of the pocket like Kingsbury's iteration. That makes the offense a great match for the Golden Bears of California.

Jared Goff and the Cal offense was seventh in the country in yards per play and 17th in scoring. Davis Webb has the potential to provide similar numbers. Webb's problem has always been unlocking the potential that tags him as a 6'4" 230-pound NFL caliber QB.

I hope he unlocks it and beats the University of Texas and Cal has a great year.

Maybe Texas Tech can meet him in the Holiday Bowl.
