A company named Powell-Morse analyzed the reading levels for 225 songs that spent three or more weeks on Billboard's Pop, Country, Rock and Hip-Hop song charts. It discovered country music has some of the smartest lyrics out there.

The way the mainstream media tends to treat country music you'd think they have the lowest level! However, among those tested, country actually had the highest grade level.

But before we get too excited, all the genre's were pretty low, plus they've dropped in the past decade. Each genre's lyrics showed a reading level of second to third grade. That's right around a nursery rhyme.

Of the four genres analyzed, country music came out with the highest average reading level (3.3), followed by pop (2.9), rock (2.9), and R&B/hip-hop (2.6).

Yes, hip-hop had the lowest, and country had the highest. But again, they'd have you believe pop stars are right up there with rocket scientists.

So, among the biggest country stars from the past 10 years, who had the best reading average? Not a big surprise here, but Carrie Underwood almost got to the 4th grade reading level. Blake Shelton, Brad Paisley and Kenny Chesney were all around the 3.5 mark. Rascal Flatts was at 3.2, and Florida Georgia Line was the lowest at 2.93.

So, what does this all mean? Not a lot, really. A good song doesn't have to really even have words! But the fact we're dropping lower and lower might have something to say about our own intelligence -- or at least our attention spans.

By the way, the lowest people on the list? Ke$sha's songs had a reading level of between a first and second grader, and Lady Gaga was just about the second grade level. Sounds about right!
