You tilted your head to the side and went, “Huh,” when you first heard about it. You said to yourself, “Oh yeah, I’d forgotten about that,” when you saw casting news about it. Now, you can see it for yourself — or, at least, two minutes and forty-two seconds of it: Dax Shepard’s CHiPs movie remake finally has its very first trailer.

The headline here is that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story held onto the number one of the box office top 10 for the third weekend in a row, which was expected. He took the Oscars by storm as the helmer behind Dances with Wolves in 1990, followed that up with the bizarro The Postman in 1997, and returned in 2003 with the Western Open Range. But for the past 13 years, it’s been all radio silence from Costner as to when audiences can expect another go at directing. As he’s hit the interview circuit to promote Hidden Figures, however, the actor has floated an idea for a grand project on a scale unlike anything he’s attempted before.

You know that Matthew McConaughey’s big breakthrough as an actor was as Wooderson in Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused. But did you know Wooderson was originally intended as a very small part? After Linklater cast McConaughey in the role (after he grew a mustache and longer hair to prove he wasn’t too handsome for the part), and the actor repeatedly impressed the director with his improvisations and comedy, he beefed up Wooderson’s screen time considerably. Every year, when the bottom drops out of the summer movie season and audiences decide to stay home and watch television instead, some well-meaning critic will publish an article asking if cinema is dead. And every year, I pose the same question in response: “Is Tom Cruise still an action star?” As long as Tom Cruise is running across multiplex screens — fighting rogue nations, government consiparcies, and even the occasional mummy — there is still hope for cinema. Then, when Cruise’s career is done and Hollywood is in ashes, then, cinema, you have my permission to die.
