The unidentified man was swimming in Lake Murry near Ardmore, Oklahoma.

The report from Everythinglubbock.com says the man was swimming in the lake last week and contracted primary amebic meningoencephalitis, known as PAM.  The rare infection is caused by the Naegleria fowleri amoeba.

According to the report you can be infected with PAM from swimming in warm fresh water. The amoeba enters the nose and goes into the brain where is causes swelling and is almost always fatal.

Since 1952, there have been about 133 known cases and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, three people survived.

Even though it is rare, health officials advise you should be aware of the potential risks and try to avoid water going in your nose the best you can.

A California woman died from the same infection last month.
