Brad Paisley Explains How Demi Lovato Was Chosen for ‘Without a Fight’
Brad Paisley released his duet with Demi Lovato on Friday morning. “Without a Fight” is a guitar-fueled country song about the very real fights couples have. The singer says he knew the story needed a female perspective, and once he met Lovato, it became clear it needed her.
“For me I wanted (“Without a Fight”) to have that feeling of angst in a relationship,”Paisley tells Taste of Country Nights host Sam Alex. “Everybody goes through a period where you’re fighting a lot, I think. Sometimes that can be a good thing for your relationship. That conflict can lead to making up.”
Paisley met Lovato at the iHeartRadio Music Awards in April and admits their performance of “Stone Cold” set the wheels in motion. The new single is one of the first songs he came up with for his upcoming album (expected in the fall), and he’s been working at it all spring.
“By the time the song leads to this loud ending … it needed to be the right female voice,” the country star says, adding that “Without a Fight” is symbolic of an album that takes on some very real, gritty topics.
As a singer, Paisley says the pop star is “otherworldly.”
“I think she can hit notes that we can’t hear,” the Country Jam Colorado headliner jokes with Alex. “It’s hard to have character when you can sing that high. But she does.”
“Without a Fight” was released after several days of teasing on social media. Paisley let fans know he’d recorded a duet, but didn’t reveal who he’d recorded it with until just before releasing the song. The uptempo track finds the two harmonizing as opposed to trading lyrics. It’s the first single from Paisley’s next album, his 11th and the first since Moonshine in the Trunk in 2014.
