Brad Paisley‘s wife, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, has lost her mother after a lengthy battle with dementia.

According to People magazine, Linda Payne Williams passed away on Wednesday (Nov. 16). She was 73 years old.

The actor, best-known for her role in Father of the Bride, confirmed the news in a post to Instagram that depicts her mother younger and carefree, writing, “I will remember you this way, Mom. Rest in love and peace. Linda Williams: June 22nd, 1943-November 16, 2016.”

People reports that Williams worked as a foreign correspondent, and later became a leading fundraiser for the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. In 2005, she was diagnosed with a rare early-onset form of dementia called primary progressive aphasia.

Williams-Paisley says her mother began to show early signs of the disease when she was 59, but it took several years to ascertain what was wrong with her. She documented her family’s struggle with the disease and its impact on not just her mother, but her loved ones in a 2015 book titled Where the Light Gets In: Losing My Mother Only to Find Her Again.

In an essay for Redbook, Williams-Paisley described how the stress of caring for his wife full-time eventually sent her father to the hospital with a panic attack before the family finally opted for a care facility. She also detailed the resentment, shame and secrecy that came along with the disease, and how she had to learn to love the woman her mother had become, and not the mom she remembered.

Paisley and Williams-Paisley have been married since 2003 and have two sons together, Huck and Jasper.
