If you’ve ever visited Blake Shelton‘s official Twitter account, you know just how funny the ‘Hillbilly Bone’ country superstar can be. Although Lionel Richie was aware of the singer’s reputation, the music legend admits he was surprised at Shelton’s knack for telling a good joke as they were recording ‘You Are’ for Richie’s country duets project, ‘Tuskegee.’

“I didn’t realize how funny Blake is!” Richie tells The Boot. The newly-released clip gives fans an exclusive look into the recording process of the remake of the 1984 Top 5 pop classic. All parties involved — including famed Nashville producer Tony Brown — seem to be having a blast working with Shelton and Richie.

Shelton is one of  13 country music stars–including Tim McGraw, Jason Aldean, Jennifer Nettles, Shania Twain, Kenny Rogers, Jimmy Buffett and more–who teamed up with Richie to remake his classic songs into country music duets. ‘Tuskegee’ has been sitting near the top of the charts since its release, and reached Platinum status last week.

‘Tuskegee’ has spent four weeks at the top spot on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart, and it spent three weeks on top of the Billboard all-genre 200. Richie joins Ray Charles as the second musician in history to have No. 1 albums on both the Billboard Country Albums and R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts.
