Are We On the Way to a Snowy, White Christmas This Year in Lubbock?
Back to school time is here, fall is around the corner and we are moving past the triple digit heat of the summer. But what do we have to look forward to this winter here in Lubbock?
This past winter was pretty mild compared to the near-historic blizzard we faced the year before. But are we going to be that lucky again this year and have another mild winter?
I enjoy a snow day as much as anyone. It’s great when you can stay home, make hot chocolate and build a snowman. But when you are hoping to travel to be with family during the holidays, the thought of a snowy winter inspires me to buy a big, 4-wheel drive truck (which I need for towing a horse trailer, anyway!)
The Farmer’s Almanac has a prediction for us that could definitely send me truck shopping right away. Here’s what they are telling us Lubbock can expect this winter:
ANNUAL WEATHER SUMMARY: NOVEMBER 2017 TO OCTOBER 2018
Winter will be colder than normal, with above-normal precipitation. The coldest periods will be from late November into early December, from late December into early January, and in early February. Snowfall will be near to above normal, with the snowiest periods in late December and early to mid-February.
It looks like Thanksgiving, which falls on November 23rd this year, and Christmas Day (December 25th) are both in danger of cold, snowy weather this year.
Additionally, spring will be cooler, summer will be hot and we possibly need to prepare for some rough weather next fall. Here’s what the Farmer’s Almanac says:
April and May will be cooler and rainier than normal. Summer will be cooler and rainier than normal, with the hottest periods in mid-July and mid-August. Expect a hurricane threat in late August. September and October will be warmer and rainier than normal. Watch for a tropical storm threat in early September.
The Farmer’s Almanac claims 80 percent accuracy traditionally, so let’s get prepared and be safe. As always, we’ll keep you up to date with the latest weather information on Lonestar 99.5! Take us with you everywhere you go.
