5 Tips to Avoid Leaving Children in Hot Cars
Summer is heating up in West Texas, and the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), warns us about the deadly dangers of leaving children and animals in hot cars.
Every year, children die from vehicular heatstroke due to being left in hot cars or entering cars undetected.
Texas DPS offers these tips to avoid vehicular heatstroke related injuries and deaths to our children this summer.
- 1
Always check your backseats before walking away
We are all busy and even though you don't want to think you would ever get out of your car and forget your kids or pets, it happens. Don't let it happen to you.
- 2
Have reminders to ensure you don't leave kids in the car
For example, leave your bag, lunch or cell phone in the backseat by your child's car seat.
- 3
Call 911 if you see a child unattended in a car
They will instruct you on what to do next.
- 4
If a child goes missing, open the doors and trunk to every vehicle in the area
One third of all deaths occur when a child accesses a parked vehicle unnoticed.
- 5
Teach your kids not to play in vehicles and always keep car keys out of their reach
Always keep an eye on your kids and if you do lose track of them for a minute, give yourself peace of mind knowing you have your vehicle keys tucked away and that your vehicles are locked, to keep your kids safe.
