5 Reasons Why Cantaloupe Is the Unsung Hero Melon of Summer
It's almost summer, and what melon is the lauded hero of summer? Of course it's watermelon. Everywhere you look, it's watermelon, watermelon, watermelon. But there's another melon that is just as good, if not better. Here's why.
Brenda Duby with United Supermarkets says that not only are cantaloupes delicious, they have health benefits that qualify them to be the melon hero of summer.
But how do tell when a cantaloupe is ripened to the peak of sweetness?
Brenda said that you look for the skin, which looks like a net, to be slightly raised. The cantaloupe should feel kind of heavy and have a fresh melon fragrance. There shouldn't be any soft spots and the ends should be smooth.
Brenda also recommends rinsing the cantaloupe off before you slice it the same way you rinse any fruit or veggie before you eat it.
Pair it with salty meats, cottage cheese, cheese or yogurt.
Cantaloupes are packed with nutrition and an all-around good food. Here are five reasons why it's the real hero of summer.

Slice these bad boys, pop the seeds out of the middle and you're good to go. No spitting seeds with every bite.
If you have a sweet tooth, cantaloupe is the answer. Sweeter than watermelon and so much better for you than processed sugary snacks.
During the hot West Texas summers, cantaloupes are a cooling, refreshing compliment to breakfast, lunch or dinner or by themselves.
If you work out in the sun or just work out, cantaloupes are ideal. They are loaded with potassium and healthier than a sports drink, they replenish the potassium you lose out in the sun or getting buff at the gym.
