A 3-year-old Texas girl with developmental issues and limited verbal communication skills is still missing days after her adoptive father says he ordered her to stand outside in the middle of the night as punishment for not drinking her milk.

Sherin Mathews of Richardson, Texas, was reported missing last Saturday morning after her adoptive father, 37-year-old Wesley Mathews, told authorities he sent her outside at 3 a.m. to punish her for not drinking her milk. After about 15 minutes, Mathews went to check on the girl, but she was gone, he said.

He said he decided to look for her, but after a search he went back home to do chores to see if she would come home. Mathews was arrested and charged with abandoning or endangering a child on Saturday, but he was released from jail a day later on a $250,000 bond.

According to USA Today, since the incident, Mr. Mathew's 4-year-old daughter has been placed into foster care. The mother in the case has not been found guilty of any wrongdoing since she was asleep during the alleged incident.

Mathews and his wife adopted Sherin at an orphanage in India two years ago. Mathews reportedly told authorities it wasn't strange for the child to wake up in the middle of the night to eat since she was malnourished when the family took her in and they were trying to help her gain weight.

Sherin is described as 3-feet-tall and 22 pounds, with black hair with brown eyes.
